- 1884: the beginnings of what will become Victorinox: It all starts when Mr. Karl Elsener's cutlery workshop opens in Ibach, in German-speaking Switzerland. Elsener begins by dedicating his cutlery work to the creation of knives and surgical instruments.
- 1891: This is the turning point, the talented inventor Karl Elsener creates the Swiss Association of Master Cutlers and becomes the official supplier of the multi tool pocket knife for the Swiss army, yes you have heard: the Swiss army! This famous swiss army knives will later take the form of the "Officer's Knife", a major symbol of Swiss technology and know-how, and will propel Victorinox to the global stage. The company chooses the iconic name Victorinox after the introduction of stainless steel, a true technological revolution at the time for cutler artisans and those who work with metals. The original Swiss Army Knife by Victorinox gets a patent.
- 1909: Karl has his trademark deposited. He chose to call it Victoria in honor not of Queen Victoria but to his dead mother, he laid the emblem of the cross and the shield. which is registered as a trademark in more than 120 countries.
- In 1918, the Victorinox plant had more than a hundred employees, it will be automated when Carl Elsener Jr. took over the reins in 1931. Ibach will be proud to be equipped with the world's first fully automated soaking plant!
- In the early 1920s, the cutlery industry discovered a new material: stainless steel (inox in French). The contraction of both terms gives Victorinox, the name of the company and brand still used today.
