Focus on the authentic Pot Lyonnais (Lyon Pot wine bottle) signed Minjard

Minjard, a specialist in the wine world, covers the Mâconnais, Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône wine regions and the company has become very popular with the creation of the Pot Lyonnais.

The Lyonnais Pot is a bottle with a very thick bottom (45mm) and a capacity of 46cl very precisely. In Lyon jargon, they are also called « gros cul » (litterally fat ass) for the thick bottle bottom which gives them great stability on the table.

Being a specialty of Lyon, it is mainly used as a wine serving bottle in Lyon's restaurants called « Bouchons Lyonnais » ! The bouchon Lyonnais are the typical restaurants of this city and the surrounding regions where Lyon's specialities are served such as the famous quenelles, the « tabliers de sapeur » beef tripe, the « cervelle de canut » cheese spread, the Lyonnaise salad or the « Andouillettes » sausages, all sprinkled with a glass of red wine typical of the region: Beaujolais or Côtes du Rhône ! If you are passing through Lyon, do not hesitate to visit the Vieux Lyon district and sit down at one of the famous temples of Lyon's gastronomy. Moreover, you will notice that the neck of Pot Lyonnais is often surrounded by elastics of different colours depending on whether you’ve been served Côte du Rhône or Beaujolais wine.

To come back to our exciting story about the iconic glass wine bottle from Lyon called the Pot Lyonnais...

In the 16th century, the unit of measurement called the "asnée" was replaced by the pot, which then had a capacity of 2.08 litres. This unit of measurement has varied considerably over time.In the 17th century, its capacity was reduced to 1.04 litres. It was sometimes called «  Pot de Papa » (Dad's pot). The exact capacity of 46cl of the Lyon pot was established under a law in 1843 and it was not until the 19th century that the Lyon bottle became known.  Moreover, this measure was not to everyone's taste at the time and enraged the Insurgent Canuts of the Red Cross Districts, known as the Voracious! You must ask yourself why is that ? Because the Lyon workers know as Canuts were only entitled to 50cl of wine paid by their employer and no longer to 1L of wine and so the capacity of the bottle was therefore reduced to 50cl. Subsequently, the employers decided to further reduce the capacity of the bottle from 50 cl to 46 cl. As a result, one litre of wine was enough to fill two 46cl Pot Lyonnais and the boss glass. Nice story about this famous glass bottle, typically French and 100% Lyonnaise, right?
