Unlike what you tend to believe the invention of the vacuum flask is relatively old. Scottish physicist-chemist Sir James Dewar was the first to develop an insulating container made with a double-walled glass: the two walls are separated from one another and thus gain thermal resistance. It allows to avoid temperature loss and insulate the contents of thermal shocks. In 1904, thanks to that technology named a ‘Dewar vessel’ or ‘Arsonval vessel’ after its inventors, the German company Thermos GmbH started to market insulated bottles.
In 1963, the Thermos brand entered the public domain in the United States. In its ordinary usage, a Thermos designates vacuum flasks with insulation properties, which are manufactured with vials or ampoules of glass, plastics or metal, for the sake of economy and resistance, with single or double walls. Actually, the air contained in one or two successive layers constituting the only insulation. However, only official Thermos products can keep food and drinks hot or cold for a long time thanks to a particularly advanced technology in this area.
