Minjard

Minjard

Minjard is a specialist in the wine world covering the Mâconnais, Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône regions. The company became known especially through the creation of the pot lyonnais.

The pot lyonnais is a very thick-bottom bottle having an exact capacity of 16oz / 46 cl. It is a specialty of Lyon mainly used in typical restaurants of Lyon and in its regions.

In the Middle Ages, the unit of measure called the ‘asnée’ was replaced by the pot lyonnais which then had the capacity of 2.08 Litre.

In the seventeenth century, its capacity was decreased to 1.04 liters. The exact capacity of the pot lyonnais was set by a law in 1843 and it is only in the nineteenth century that the Lyon pot became known.

In fact, the silk workers or "canuts" of Lyon were entitled to 50 cl of wine paid by the employers. To exploit the workers a little more, the employers reduced the capacity of the pot 17oz / 50 cl to 16oz / 46 cl. In this way, it was possible to fill two pots and the glass of the employer with only 1 liter of wine.
